Where to Stay in the Cotswolds: The Pig near Bath

Where to Stay in the Cotswolds: A Charming Manor House Hotel near Bath

If you know me at all, you know that in another life, I most certainly lived in an English manor house with lush gardens, sheep to groom, and plenty of space to occupy my thoughts—while I wrote classic English literature, obviously.  In this life, I will gratefully settle for getting to visit The Cotswolds—my own slice of heaven—for three short nights to celebrate my birthday. After several trips to the English Countryside , this is one my top picks for where to stay in the Cotswolds.

A Weekend in Somerset

From Bath, we drove nine miles to Pensford in Somerset to The Pig near Bath, the perfect counterpoint to our stay at the Gainsborough Bath Spa. With a laid back vibe, The Pig manages to strike the perfect balance between a luxury getaway and affordable, rustic charm. We befriended the farmer’s kitty, who came to wait for us at the edge of the garden that was like something out of Martha Stewart Living, and drank Bloody Marys on the grass, as the deer came to roam at sunset. Though we had been sufficiently pampered the day before, you can book a massage inside one of their adorable Potting Sheds for the full experience.

Whether you come for a meal, or a weekend, I can guarantee it won’t be long enough. Slide on your wellies, and make yourself at home.

The Pig near Bath is my next Stylish Stay.

What I Love: That you would never have to leave the hotel for 2-3 nights and be thoroughly happy and entertained.

Something to Know: The rooms do not have air conditioning, but we were more than comfortable, even in August. Sleeping with the windows open was a nice change from the L.A. heat.

Suite Dreams: Although I didn’t see the rooms inside the house, I would recommend our garden cottage. I loved that it felt like a luxury cabin—rustic chic if you will. They had me at clawfoot tub!

Stylish Sips:  They call The Pig, “a restaurant with rooms”—a bold statement that delivers. We ate breakfast twice and had dinner on my actual birthday. The ingredients are locally-sourced—much from their own garden—so everything is fresh and in season. Don’t worry, the pigs on the property are just pets!  I also had the best Bloody Mary of my life, and the secret was to muddle the olives in the bottom of the glass first.

Cool Factor: The Pig Hotel brand is a collection of four hotels in the south-west of England that are extremely popular. The brand is a new take on the country house hotel experience, offering a more approachable, less stuffy home away from home. In terms of the name, “The Pig,” the owner, Robin Hutson, was inspired by the ultra cool Spotted Pig restaurant in New York.

Hero Shot: You in the garden wearing wellies w/ a pink umbrella. Or was it Professor Plum in the conservatory with the candlestick? ;).

We were so sad to leave this little guy! We invited him in and he curled up right in my husband’s arms and slept through the night. Don’t worry, if you aren’t a cat person, he won’t bother you or come inside uninvited.

He was snoring SO loud. Adorable!

Every day at sunset, the deer come to the meadow and graze. So spectacular!

Thanks to Two Nights In for planning our amazing stay!
