The Coolest Hotel in San Diego: The Pendry Hotel

It had been years since I’d spent time in San Diego, though it’s only a two-hour drive from L.A. Wanting to visit our family who live in the area, we used this as our chance to stay at the newly opened Pendry Hotel, bringing a refined, yet modern vibe to the Gaslamp Quarter, and definitely the coolest hotel in San Diego. From the cozy, tiled grand lobby to the gorgeous Provisional Kitchen, Café & Mercantile—designed in partnership with Raan and Lindsay Parton from LA’s innovative retail concept, Alchemy Works—every turn is infused with art (Ron Church’s surf-themed photography exhibit is on display off the lobby), giving a sophisticated nod to the culture of San Diego.

What I Love: Though the hotel has 317 guestrooms, six restaurants and bars, a spa and wellness program, and a booming night club, The Pendry manages to still feel boutique—meaning you feel comfortable and well-taken-care-of.

Something to Know: The hotel pool turns into a bit of a scene during the day, as it is located in the middle of the Gaslamp District, otherwise known as party central. I spent both mornings in the perfectly heated whirlpool, where I had The Pool House mostly to myself, proving every day should begin with a relaxing, warm “bath.”

Suite Dreams: Our gorgeous room had a glass shower that protruded into the bedroom—perfect for your voyeuristic fantasies! Never fear, there was a curtain if you prefer privacy. I loved the wallpaper details, the plaid chaise, and a perfect overhead view of the pool below on the third floor rooftop. If only I had a drone!

Stylish Sips: Fifth and Rose is the stunning bar off the lobby, showcasing hot pink chairs that are glamorous, yet sophisticated—just like the cocktails. Order the “Where’s my Yacht,” just so you can say that out loud. The Provisional Kitchen, Cafe, & Mercantile is the most beautiful setting to sip a latte and dive into a chocolate croissant.

Cool Factor: The hotel is owned by the Montage, which means they understand luxury. The Pendry is like the younger, rebellious sister.
